Do you have a trip to Auckland on the horizon? Whether you have time to kill on an afternoon with the kids, need to find something to do between meetings, or just want to explore the city, our top five list of Auckland experiences has something for every traveller.
Climb Sky Tower
When you think of Auckland it’s likely that images of the Sky Tower will come to mind. The iconic building, which stands at 328 metres tall, is the most distinct feature of the city’s skyline. Visit one of the tower’s three 360 degree observation levels and snap a selfie against stunning horizon-horizon views of Auckland, indulge in high-tea at the revolving restaurant on top of the building, or for the daredevils, give the award winning Sky Jump a go and return to street level the fastest way possible.
Shop Queen street
Want to stretch your legs in style? Head down to Queen Street and stroll through the heart of Auckland’s bustling CBD. Admire the architecture, intricate ceilings and eclectic statues of The Civic, an early 20th century theatre, or pop in for a coffee or meal at one of the numerous eateries along the strip. Regardless of your budget, this iconic street has something for every shopper – from quirky souvenir stores to high end designer and boutique apparel.
See Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki
The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki boasts the most extensive collection of historic, modern and contemporary art in New Zealand, including works by local, Māori, Pacific and international artists. Home to more than 16,000 pieces across multiple exhibition spaces, the recently renovated 1887-era building is a sight to admire in its own right. With talks, guided tours, performances, film screenings and kid’s activities running daily, there’s something for everyone at the city’s cultural hub.
Swim with sharks
Seeking a slice of adventure to spice up your afternoon? Head over to Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium and come face to face with the ocean’s apex predators. Snorkel beside School, Sand, Tiger, Wobbegong and Broadnose Sevengill sharks and observe stingrays through the safety of a shark cage. Underwater photo and video equipment is available so you can take your memories (and selfies) from the dive home with you. If the shark cage is too restricting then the Shark Dive Xtreme experience may be for you! After a scuba dive briefing, explore the depths of the predator tank cage-free and get up close and personal with New Zealand’s native marine life. We recommend booking before visiting the aquarium to save up to 30% and avoid disappointment (as there are limited sessions each day).
Drink Brother’s brewery
If your ideal afternoon involves relaxing with a pot of craft beer then Brother’s Brewery should be at the top of your Auckland to-do list. Tucked away in an old leatherworking factory on a leafy city street, this laid back brewery has over 150 different types of New Zealand beer on offer, plus an American BBQ-style restaurant on site. We recommend requesting the local Brothers Beer on tap – it’s brewed on site!
